The VII Winter Olympic Games, also known as Cortina ‘56, were held in Cortina d’Ampezzo (Italy) from the 26th January to the 5th February 1956. They were the first Olympic Games ever in Italy. A memorable event. Cortina and the Dolomites, thanks to the Olympics in 1956 reached the hearts of people from all over the world.
The overture ceremony, filmed for the first time by the RAI cameras (the main Italian public broadcaster), was attended by the President of the Italian Republic Giovanni Gronchi and Sophia Loren, the godmother of the event.
To the seventh Olympic winter Games Cortina 1956 participated 821 athletes, (132 sportswomen and 689 sportsmen) coming from 32 different countries. All the games took place in ten different sports facilities. The figure ice skating competitions were held in the ice stadium. Whereas the Alpine skiing took place on four different ski tracks: Canalone, Col Drusciè, Ilio Colli e Olimpia, and the speed skating races were located in the charming surroundings: the Misurina lake..
